Cash in your pocket and browsing Kickstarter is a dangerous combination! It was just sheer luck I stumbled upon the Kickstarter campaign of this pen a few months ago and I am super excited for it to finally arrive. I typically don’t do first impression posts but I was so excited for my first Kickstarter pen to arrive I immediately whipped out the camera and started taking shots! Today we look at the Namisu X-01. Let’s get inked!
Namisu is a company based in Fife, United Kingdom. They first began with the launch of their first Kickstarter project, the Nexus Minimal Fountain Pen. With a pledged goal of $10,000 they managed to get 2,000+ backers and ultimately ended up with $104,500! Since then they have been releasing different fountain pens with their unique minimalist style.
I was happy to see them not sink a bunch of money into packaging. It was simple and served its purpose. I know there are a lot of package junkies out there but I order a product for the product and not for the box it came with. I won’t be shoving the box in my pocket and carrying it with me every day like I will the pen. The pen came in a box, in a box, with a soft holder it sat in. The pen also comes with 1 Schmidt p8126 refill.
The Namisu X-01 is a sexy and simple aluminum pen with three machined rings around the grip and a twist mechanism. The machined rings are very deep but they are super smooth and it doesn’t stab my fingers to grip it (nice!). The X-01 comes in Titanium, Brass, or Aluminum. Mine is the black anodized aluminum model and I am happy to have it. The body is extremely light but still manages to feel very solid.
The twist mechanism is at the butt of the pen. It has some machined concave lines that make gripping the tail very easy to twist. When you twist clockwise it extends the pen and it will stop when it is done.. However when you twist the pen counter clockwise it retracts but there is no catch so if you continue twisting then it will actually pull the tail end out. I can see this bugging some people. It would be nice to have a catch that stops the tail when you are done retracting.
The Namisu X-01 takes the Schmidt p8126, P8127, and p8128 refills along with most Parker-style refills. This was a great decision. I love all of my pens that take this refill.
I have not tried any of Namisu’s other products but I can say I am definitely impressed with this one. However let’s ask the hard question.. Is it worth the $45? I would definitely say yes. Comparing it to the Retro51 ($20-$28)- the Retro51 is amazing because of the sheer amount of styles you can choose from but I love the Namisu’s simple design more than the Retro51 Stealth. Comparing the X-01 to the Karas Kustoms EDK ($60)? I like the EDK more because of the click mechanism and it has a super solid clip. I haven’t tried the Baron Fig Squire but I hope to soon. I can see the X-01 being very similar to the Squire with the exception of the machined grip. The Namisu is like that middle of the road pen that would be great if you want something a little more professional but still simple to use in the office. I say that because it doesn’t have a clip so I won’t be throwing it in my pocket as I run out the door.
- Weight is great
- Takes my favorite Schmidt refills
- Available in all black <3
- Nothing stops the twist mechanism when going counter clockwise and it will remove the tail of the pen.
- No clip. Problem for me but that is because I’m a field engineer. For those that are stationary it probably won’t be a problem.
- Round body will make your pen roll away, which could be resolve with a clip 😉
Price: Namisu doesn’t have this listed on their site as of yet but I got it in their Kickstarter for $45.
Body: Aluminum, Black Anodized Aluminum, Brass, or Titanium
Refill: Schmidt p8126, p8127, p8127 and Parker-style refills
